From March 25th to 27th, the 2022 Electric Vehicle 100 Forum was held online, The battery technology was clearly differentiated again.

The 4680 large cylindrical battery has risen strongly, and has been favored by companies such as Panasonic, Yiwei Lithium Energy and BAK.

When thinking that the next generation must be a solid electrolyte, SES proposed the concept of a hybrid liquid lithium metal battery.

Of course, the success of these routes depends on the market. However, large cylindrical 46 series, semi-solid batteries and hybrid liquid lithium metal batteries have not yet entered the commercialization stage.

Kirin battery VS cylindrical battery

In 2020, cylindrical cells will account for less than 10% of China's power batteries, and in the global market, cylindrical cells will only account for 23%, significantly lower than square batteries and soft pack batteries.

Advantages of Large Cylindrical Batteries.

Since Tesla launched the 4680, cylindrical cells have increased market share. Panasonic, Yiwei Lithium Energy and BAK Battery all support large cylindrical cells.

First of all, the design and manufacture of large cylinders to recycling can be standardized.

Secondly, the structure of the large cylinder is stable and stress-free throughout its life cycle.

During the operation of the prismatic battery and the pouch battery, internal stress and expansion force will be generated due to expansion, and the internal structure of the battery will change. For cylindrical batteries, there is no change as always from the beginning to the end of battery use. According to the plan, the battery will be mass-produced in 2024, when the energy density will reach 285Wh/kg.

According to experts' inference, by 2025, large cylindrical cells will account for at least 30% of the share, which is about 480GWh, which has exceeded the total global demand for power batteries in 21 years.

As the main supplier of Tesla, Panasonic also judges that 4680 batteries will become the main product of round batteries in the future.

In the face of the fierce offensive of large cylindrical batteries, CATL also launched a new product-Kirin battery as a counterattack.

According to Wu Kai, chief scientist of CATL, this is a system-level battery technology, and its energy density is 13% higher than that of the 4680 system.

According to the data released by CATL, when the Kirin battery uses lithium iron phosphate, the system energy density exceeds 160Wh/kg and 290Wh/L; when use the ternary system , the system energy density can reach 250Wh/kg and 450Wh/L. Under the same cell chemistry system and the same battery pack size, the Kirin battery can hold 13% more power than the 4680 system.

It can be seen that the offensive and defensive battle of the square and the big column has already started.
