Series 1: Containing more than 99.00% aluminum, good electrical conductivity, good corrosion resistance, good welding performance, low strength, not supportive of heat strengthening. Applications: High-purity aluminum (containing more than 99.9% aluminum), mainly used in scientific experiments, chemical industry and specific applications.
Series 2: Aluminum alloy with copper is the main combined element, manganese, magnesium, lead and bismuth are also added for better performance. For example: 2011 alloy, attention towards safety should be paid during melting process because harmful gas will be produced during this process. 2014 alloy is used in the aerospace industry and has high strength. 2017 alloy has a little lower strength than 2014 alloy, but is easier to process. Applications: aviation industry (2014 alloy), screws (2011 alloy) and industries with higher use temperature (2017 alloy).
Series 3: Aluminum alloy with manganese is the main alloying element, can not heat treated and strengthened, good corrosion resistance and good welding performance, good plasticity. (close to super aluminum alloy). Applications: Seamless oil guide tubes used in aircraft (3003 alloy), easy to pull cans (3004 alloy).
Series 4: Silicon based, not commonly used. Some 4 series can be heat treated and strengthened, but some are not.
Series 5: magnesium-based. Good resistance and endurance, good welding performance, good fatigue strength, can not be heat treated to strengthen, only can be cold processed to improve the strength. Applications: lawn mower handles, aircraft fuel tank conduits, bulletproof vests.
Series 6: magnesium and silicon based, is currently the most widely used alloy. 6063, 6061 is the most used, 6082, 6160, 6125, 6262, 6060, 6005, 6463. 6063, 6060, 6463’s strength is relatively low in the series 6. 6262, 6005, 6082, 6061’s strength is higher. Its strength is medium in all series, good corrosion resistance, good welding performance, good process performance, and good oxidation coloring performance. Applications: cross-energy tools such as: car luggage rack, doors, windows, body, heat sink, between the box shell.
Series 7: Zinc-based, sometimes a small amount of magnesium and copper are added. The extrusion speed is slower than series 6, and the welding performance is good. 7005 and 7075 are the highest grade in series 7, it can be heat treated and strengthened. Applications: Aerospace (aircraft load-bearing components, landing gear), rockets, propellers, airships.
Series 8: other alloys.
Series 9: alternative alloys.
